OTTAWA, Nov. 8, 2018 /CNW/ – The National Gallery of Canada is pleased to announce the addition of a new annual fellowship, beginning January 2019. The Rodger and Joann McLennan Canadian War Art Research Fellowship encourages and supports advanced research in Canadian and Indigenous Canadian war and military art. The award, valued at up to $5,000 CAD annually, is open to Canadian and international art historians, curators, critics, conservators, graduate students and other professionals working in the visual arts or in museology and related disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Application guidelines for the new award can be found on the Gallery’s website https://www.gallery.ca/research/fellowships  and will be accepted until December 2, 2018.

“We are pleased to be able to expand the Gallery’s Fellowship Program to include a fellowship in this important area of Canadian art historical research” said Cyndie Campbell, Chief, Library, Archives and Research Fellowship Program at the National Gallery of Canada. “We are very grateful to our donor Laura Brandon for her generosity.  It is through such remarkable donations that we can continue to support scholarship through our Research Fellowship Program.”

The Rodger and Joann McLennan Canadian War Art Research Fellowship supports original research relating to any aspect of Canadian war or military art, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking and other media, focusing on the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Canadian War Museum, and Library and Archives Canada.

A jury, composed of National Gallery of Canada staff and external jurors, will review the applications and announce the winner in December 2018. The term of the new fellowship is one calendar year beginning January 1, 2019. 

The Rodger and Joann McLennan Canadian War Art Research Fellowship is a welcome addition to the Gallery’s Research Fellowship Program which includes fellowships offered by the Canadian Photography Institute and the Claudia De Hueck Fellowship in Art Conservation.
