Senate Poised To Boost Coast Guard Icebreaker Funds, Looks To Arctic Needs

By Emelie Rutherford The Senate moved yesterday to add funding to the Coast Guard's budget, not requested by the Obama administration, for rehabbing a polar icebreaker that has been drydocked for three years. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen testified on Capitol Hill Tuesday that he supports adding funds to the service's fiscal year 2010 budget request to bring the USCG Polar Star (WAGB-10) icebreaker out of caretaker status.
