The Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD) completed a successful test of the Barak-8 Air and Missile Defense System on Monday, prime contractor Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) said.

The Barak-8s are operated by the Israeli Defense Forces and the Indian military.

The test scenario began with the launching of a target. After the target was detected by the system radar, the weapons system calculated the optimal interception point, launched the missile into the operational trajectory, and successfully intercepted it. All of the system components met the test goals to the satisfaction of the customer representatives, IAI said in a statement.

Barak-8 is an advanced air and missile defense system that does both point defense and long range anti-missile and air-defense. It provides protection against a variety of land and naval aerial platforms such as aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aircraft, and sea-skimming missiles.  It includes an advanced Phased Array digital radar, command and control, vertical launchers, and missiles carrying an advanced seeker.

“This is an important milestone in the cooperation between India and Israel and in the development of the Barak-8 advanced air defense system,” Dr. Avinash Chander, Head of DRDO and Scientific adviser to the Indian defense minister, said in a statement.

Boaz Levi, executive vice president and General Manager of Systems, Missiles & Space Group added, “We’re very satisfied with the test results. Its success is an important example to the fruitful collaboration between IMOD, defense industries in Israel and our customers in Israel and abroad.”

The Barak-8 system is a joint collaboration between IMOD’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India, IAI, ELTA Systems Ltd (an IAI group and subsidiary), and RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems.
