The Navy has awarded Rockwell Collins [COL] an initial $54-million contract to upgrade 11 E-6B aircraft with options that could reach an additional $241 million.
The work is being done under a block one modification program to address immediate modernization requirements, Rockwell Collins said in a statement yesterday.
The initial award covers material, installation and other activities for the next three aircraft, and at large includes production engineering support, field service support, operator and maintenance crew training.
“This upgrade brings many new capabilities to the Navy, including better communication and mission capabilities, and plays a key role in providing reliable and survivable communications between our nation’s leadership and U.S. strategic forces,” said Dave Nieuwsma, vice president and general manager of Airborne Solutions for Rockwell Collins.
The upgrades include an open system for mission avionics, multi-level secure network for message processing, and radio control and monitoring as well as other mission applications, the Rockwell Collins statement said.
