Jeffery Geiger, the president of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a builder of destroyers in Bath, Maine, will become the president of submarine producer General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn. That move will be effective Nov. 4.

Frederick Harris will become president of Bath Iron Works while continuing to hold the same position at General Dynamics NASSCO, which is in San Diego, Calif.

Geiger is replacing the retiring Kevin Poitras. General Dynamics said Bath Iron Works and NASSCO will continue to operate as separate, wholly owned subsidiaries.

General Dynamics spokesman Rob Doolittle said putting Harris in charge of both yards is designed to help leverage synergies and lessons learned across its surface ship building operations, not to eliminate a salary.

“The idea is to have both of the shipyards reporting to the same executive to facilitate and share more lessons learned and opportunities for improvement across the operations,” Doolittle said. The changes were announced on Wednesday.
