The Transportation Security Administration has awarded Smiths Detection a 30-month contract for additional IONSCAN 600 explosive trace detectors to recapitalize the existing ETD test bed. The value of the award, which includes a two-year warranty period, wasn’t disclosed. TSA says there are currently 165 ETDs in the air cargo test bed that are reaching their end-of-life, have critical maintenance issues and that only fully meet its old detection standard. The agency wants to incrementally replace all 165 ETDs by 2021. TSA says the IONSCAN 6000 was the first unit approved under the new detection standard. Morpho Detection, which is now part of OSI Systems, has a candidate system but it won’t be ready for testing until FY ’18.
