The Air Force June 24 awarded Lockheed Martin [LMT] a $1.9 billion contract modification for Space-Based Infrared Systems (SBIRS) geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellites 5 and 6, according to a Defense Department statement.
The contract modification includes performance incentives and options for acoustic testing and launch operations. It completes production of the SBIRS GEO 5/6 satellites, which was started with the procurement of long-lead parts. It also completes the associated ground operations and processing updates.
Work is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2022. In all, $266 million in fiscal year 2013 missile procurement funds and $266 million in FY ’14 missile procurement funds are obligated at the time of award. The contract is not multi-year.
SBIRS is a constellation infrared missile warning satellites.
