Smiths Detection Partners with Optosecurity to Offer X-Ray Upgrades
Smiths Detection has signed a distribution agreement with Optosecurity to provide airports with upgrades to Smiths X-Ray baggage scanners to meet forthcoming European Union screening standards. The upgrade with Optosecurity’s OptoScreener device enables Smiths to take its HI-SCAN 6040i, 6046si and 7555i X-Ray systems to the level of EU certified liquid explosives detection system Type C performance, which means the ability to screen multiple liquid containers simultaneously when placed outside the baggage. The EU is slated to lift the current ban on liquids in handheld luggage in April 2013. OptoScreener is about the size of a desktop computer and can be installed in X-Ray scanners already in operation. “As the EU deadline approaches, it is all the more important for airports to be aware of the options now available to meet evolving threats while minimizing costs and changes to security layouts,” says Mal Maginnis, president of Smiths Detection.
Suspect Detection Systems Introduces Remote Screening System
Suspect Detection Systems (SDSS) has introduced the Cogito C300R Remote Mass Thermal-based Screening System which is designed to instantly and remotely isolate potential terrorists and criminals in a crowd that may be carrying narcotics, weapons, explosives and other contraband. SDSS says the system has been successfully tested at an Israeli airport under the supervision of local securities agencies, and at a major railway station in Asia. The system is designed for use at terminals, airports, border crossings, and entrances to sensitive buildings or public areas.
ITT Exelis Coastal Surveillance Radar Operating in Sweden
ITT Exelis [XLS] says it has delivered, installed and completed preliminary acceptance testing of the first radar system in Sweden designed to enhance the country’s coastal surveillance capabilities. The enhancements are based on the Exelis LCR-2020 radar system and its integrated, turnkey coastal surveillance system, the SABER-2020. “This is a critical milestone for Exelis and the Swedish Armed Forces as it marks the official start of enhancing Sweden’s ability to defend its entire coastline,” says Chris Bernhardt, president of Exelis Electronic Systems. The upgrade is entering the operational test phase for sea targets after meeting expectations for air targets.
RedXDefense Launches Handheld Narcotics, Explosives and GSR Detection System
RedXDefense has released the XCAT handheld system that can detect narcotics, explosives and gunshot residue (GSR). The one-step system weighs just 1.5 pounds and costs $1,500. “At this price point, all law enforcement and security forces can be equipped with a detection system,” RedXDefense says. The XCAT system uses detection cards with specially formulated detection inks and software to identify characteristics unique to each individual or group of chemically-related substances and returns a simple red or green light signal to the user.
