NYPD Demonstrates FIDO X-3 ETD System

The New York City Police Department recently demonstrated its FIDO X-3 explosive trace detection (ETD) system in an event to showcase upgrades funded by the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology (S&T) branch and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The improvements include more effective swabs, which have been modified to increase the number of particles they collect at a time. To date, 100 modified swabs have been delivered to NYPD for user assessment and feedback. “A simple solution greatly increased the effectiveness of this important tool,” says Dr. Laura Parker, program manager for S&T’s Secondary Screening Program. These improvements enhanced the detection capabilities of the FIDO X-3 even more than we had hoped.” The FIDO X-3 is supplied by FLIR Systems [FLIR].
