The State Department approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of 120 AIM-120C-7/C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) to South Korea for $253 million.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said it notified Congress of the sale on Thursday.

The sale covers the 120 AMRAAMs as well as containers, weapon support and support equipment, spare and repair parts, and other logistical and program support.

The primary contractor is missile producer Raytheon [RTN].

DSCA said South Korea will use the AMRAAMs to increase its stock of medium-range missiles for its F-15K, KF-16, and F-35 fleets as it defends against current and future threats.

The agency underscored this sale would “further strengthen the interoperability” between the countries.

This notification comes less than a month after the State Department approved $500 million in AMRAAMs to Hungary (Defense Daily, Aug. 27).
