Learning Without Tears and VetAdvisor Join Forces to Launch Operation Military Gratitude

Program Invites Students to Celebrate National Handwriting Day and Support our Sailors at Sea

PR Newswire

CABIN JOHN, Md., Jan. 22, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Learning Without Tears, an early education company, and VetAdvisor®, the nation’s expert in veteran-centric integrative care, today announced the launch of Operation Military Gratitude. The initiative aims to inspire students around the country to support our active military by sending handwritten notes of encouragement and gratitude, and learn more about geography, science and technology through the lens of the military. As part of the partnership, the organizations have adopted a ship, the USS John C. Stennis, an aircraft carrier currently deployed in the Indian Ocean.

“What better way to demonstrate patriotism and celebrate National Handwriting Day than for students across the U.S. to send letters of inspiration to our troops,” said VetAdvisor® and Three Wire Systems, LLC CEO, Dan Frank. “Soldiers and civilians alike use handwriting as a way of getting work done, from service updates to sticky note reminders to mathematical calculations, but this program aims at using the skill to bring joy to our troops and allow students to learn more about what happens outside the classroom.”

National Handwriting Day is January 23, the birth date of John Hancock, who is well-known for his large, exhibitionistic signature on the Declaration of Independence.

“At Learning Without Tears, we are always looking for ways to inspire our children to gather their ideas, tap into their curiosity and communicate their thoughts,” said Eric Olsen, Chairman Learning Without Tears. “Operation Military Gratitude is a win-win as students have the opportunity to learn about real life experiences of our military and the academic skills they need to do their jobs, while the sailors and officers receive warm wishes and inspiration from these students.”

Teachers can register to participate in Operation Military Gratitude here: https://www.lwtears.com/operation-military-gratitude. It takes about two months for letters to arrive on board, but check back at the website, as Learning Without Tears and VetAdvisor will publish regular updates about the ship to keep your students engaged.

About Handwriting
Students need to be well-rounded communicators in order to succeed academically, and for a wide-range of post-academic pursuits. If a child’s writing is slow or illegible, it can adversely affect the child’s school performance across all subjects, including math, and directly impacts a child’s overall academic confidence. Even for college students, handwriting is valuable. A UCLA/Princeton study found that college students remember lectures better when they’ve taken handwritten notes rather than typed ones. Many fields, such as healthcare, engineering, education, public utilities, and law, require legible handwriting. Successful handwriting is a skill that carries benefits long after it is learned in elementary school.
