Navy Wasted Almost $2 Billion On Cruiser Modernization Work With Mismanagement, GAO Finds

The Navy’s effort to modernize 11 Ticonderoga-class cruisers ended up wasting $1.84 billion on ships never finished with other cost and schedule delays that only led to three ships having their service lives extended, according to a recent government watchdog report. A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report published Tuesday noted the Navy spent about $3.7 billion originally meant to modernize 11 cruisers since 2015, but now only three are set to serve for less than the originally planned five extra…
