The Navy took delivery this week of the latest San Antonio-class (LPD-17) amphibious transport dock ship from builder Huntington Ingalls Industries [HII].

The future USS San Diego (LPD-22) is the sixth ship in the class and successfully completed acceptance trials in November.

“I’m very proud to take delivery of this vital warfighting asset for the fleet,” said Jay Stefany, the Navy’s LPD-17 program manager. “San Diego has performed very well in her testing and trials, and is the most complete ship of the class delivered to date.”

San Diego is the first LPD-17 constructed under the Class Build Plan, which is designed to leverage lessons learned from the design and construction of LPDs 17-21. The ship had the most extensive pre-delivery test program of the previous five ships and conducted three underway trials, the Navy said.

The LPD-22 is scheduled to be manned in early 2012 before sailing to its namesake city and is set for commissioning in May.
