The Navy has awarded General Dynamics [GD] Electric Boat a $459 million contract modification to continue providing design, engineering and logistics support on submarines.

The option was exercised under a $1.2 billion contract originally issued in October 2010, General Dynamics said yesterday, and includes research and development.

The contract also calls on General Dynamics to provide information services and support submarine maintenance and modernization activities, training and affordability/cost reduction efforts.

Earlier this month, the Navy awarded Electric Boat a $100.4 million contract modification to provide lead-yard services for Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.

The contract called for Electric Boat to develop, maintain and update design drawings and data, including technology insertions, for each Virginia-class submarine throughout its construction and post-shakedown availability periods.

That contract has a potential cumulative value of $881 million through 2014 if all options are exercised and funded.
