ITT Corp. [ITT] said it has been chosen by European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. (EADS) Defence & Security (DS) division to provide its SpearNet radio system for the Full-Scale Engineering Development (FSED) phase of Spain’s Combatiente del Futuro (COMFUT), a comprehensive military modernization program.

The SpearNet radio will provide the backbone for voice, data and video communications for the Spanish army.

ITT will provide its SpearNet radio and related products, as well as perform engineering services, to support EADS during the development phase of COMFUT with a potential follow-on contract for production in the future.

The FSED phase is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2008 and a production decision is expected in 2009.

“We are pleased that EADS DS has placed great confidence in ITT and chosen us to provide the highly-capable SpearNet radio system to meet the handheld requirement for this development effort,” Nick Bobay, vice president of international products and systems for ITT Communications Systems, said in a July 28 statement. “We look forward to doing our part to ensure the success of the program for both EADS DS and the Spanish army.”

The Spanish army’s COMFUT program is a dismounted soldier modernization program that, in addition to radios, includes new armor protection, rifle with night vision sights, chemical/biological protection suits, helmets, body computer, and other modern infantry requirements.
