House Passes Ill-Fated Bill To Prevent DoD ‘Sequester’ Cuts

House Republicans passed ill-fated legislation yesterday that is intended to prevent the first year of so-called sequestration cuts to the defense budget. The chamber’s approval of the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012, by a near-party-line vote of 218-199, drew criticism from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at the Pentagon. Like President Barack Obama, Panetta wants Republicans and Democrats to agree on a broader deficit-reducing plan that would prevent the nine-year sequestration cuts, which would total $55 billion for defense each…
