Groups Argue For, Against Defense Cuts

As word spread yesterday that the White House and House Republicans were working on a deficit-reduction plan, groups weighed in with arguments to both slash the Pentagon budget and protect it from cuts. President Barack Obama called in April for trimming $400 billion in security spending by 2023 as part of a deficit-cutting plan, and since then he has indicated openness to cutting even more. He is in the final days of negotiating a deficit deal with lawmakers, as an Aug. 2 deadline…
