The Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics [GD], a multi-year, $81 million contract to upgrade 30 M1 Abram tanks to the M1A2 Systems Enhancement Package Version 2 (SEPv2) configuration.
General Dynamics has converted approximately 1,620 tanks, a company spokesman said. Currently, 492 tanks are contracted for improved SEP reset, with 323 of them funded.
The most technologically advanced digital tank, the M1A2 SEP V2, includes improved displays, sights, auxiliary power and a tank-infantry phone. It also can accommodate future technology improvements to ensure compatibility with the Army’s Future Combat Systems.
The work will be done in Lima, Ohio, and Sterling Heights, Mich., with an estimated completion date of June 30, 2012.
