DTRA Awards $30M in Nuclear Threat Detection Initiatives

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency has awarded 14 contracts worth $30.1 million to various companies, universities and government laboratories for work on nuclear threat detection in the areas of collecting and sensing, and information management. The awardees include: Alion Science and Technology, $5.3 million for next-generation 3D gamma imaging, $2.5 million for a wearable detection device, and $2.9 million for boron coated straws; The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, $3.4 million for development of a collection and sensing capability; Kansas State Univ., $1.1 million for advanced trenched structure for solid-state neutron detection; Kromek Ltd., $1.5 million for silicon photomultiplier arrays for high-performance low-cost scintillation detectors; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, $1.2 million for ultra-compact and low-power, high resolution spectrometer; Northrop Grumman’s [NOC] Electronic Systems segment, Xetron unit, $4.9 million for signature discovery; Radiation Monitoring Devices, $1.8 million for Li-based alkaline earth halides for gamma neutron detection; $1.6 million for organic scintillators with pulse-shape discrimination for special nuclear material monitoring, and $601,562 for extended electrical-lifetime electronics for remote neutron detection; Univ. of Florida, $1.6 million for organic photodetectors for scintillator radiation detection applications; Univ. of Nebraska, $1.4 million for ultra low-power long duration programmable remote radiation monitoring sensor electronics; and the Univ. of Tennessee, $261,345 for nuclear and radiological detection technology.

Coastal International Security Nabs $49M Protective Services Award

The Department of Homeland Security, Federal Protective Service, has awarded Coastal International Security. Inc., a $49.1 million contract to provide armed protective service officer services to select facilities in Washington, D.C. The company will provide armed guards to several Veterans Administration buildings as well s the Lafayette Building and Northwestern Building.

CGI Nabs Awards from State Dept., Army Worth $61M

CGI Group [GIB] has received two contracts, one from the State Department and the other from the Army worth a combined $60.8 million for visa processing services and intelligence services respectively. State has awarded CGI’s Stanley Associates subsidiary a potential five-year, $32.8 million task order for visa processing services in a number of European countries. The task order was made under the 10-year, multiple award, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity Global Support Strategy for visa support services contract. It is the tenth task order won by Stanley under the contract. The company will provide services to assist with the processing of non-immigrant and immigrant visa applications. Separately, CGI received a bridge contract worth up to $28 million from the Army Intelligence & Security Command to transition to the Global Intelligence (GI) contract. CGI’s current focus is on the accreditation and operational transition of the Defense Cross-domain Analytical Capability for a Multi-Level Security database service and for cloud computing architectures that reside on classified networks. The company is also focusing on the Cloud-Enabled Advanced Analytics that involves refactoring of Biometrics Intelligence capabilities and integrating biometrics into the cloud. The GI contracts are expected to be awarded in the Jan.-Feb. 2014 timeframe.

TSA Awards L-3 $8M for EDS Support

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has awarded L-3 Communications [LLL] a $7.5 million contract for the installation and integration of medium-speed Explosives Detection System (EDS) units at Portland International Airport in Oregon. The contract will also cover enhancements to the EDS network for the airport. The award was made under an existing indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract.

TSA Awards Smiths Detection $7M for Bottled Liquid Scanners

Smiths Detection in late August received a $6.8 million contract from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to supply the agency with Bottled Liquid Scanners for use at U.S. aviation security checkpoints. Smiths is providing its RespondeR system, which is based on Raman spectroscopy technology to identify hazardous liquids sealed in bottles. The scan and analysis are completed within 20 seconds.

ForeScout CounterACT on 11 Teams Awarded CDM Contracts

Network security solutions provider ForeScout CounterACT says it is a teammate with 11 of the 17 companies that received awards from the General Services Administration in August for the potential $6 billion Department of Homeland Security Continuous Diagnostics & Mitigation (CDM) initiative. ForeScout says it will help federal agencies improve their cyber security posture by maintaining ongoing awareness of vulnerabilities and threats to enable more rapid organizational risk management decisions, remediation and reporting. The company offers real-time discovery and continuous compliance validation of any device attempting to connect to or on the network. The five-year contract allows government agencies to partner with DHS to implement CDM technology to better safeguard their networks, including the use of mobile devices.
