U.S. Remains Leading Arms Dealer As Worldwide Transfer Agreements Fall

The United States in 2008 led overwhelmingly in global arms trade agreements, making deals worth $37.8 billion, and while overall agreements dropped to their lowest level since 2005, Italy more than tripled its total from last year, moving up to a distant second at $3.5 billion. In its Sept. 4 report Conventional Arms Transfers to Developing Nations, 2001-2008, Congressional Research Service (CRS) said that developing nations continue to be the primary focus of foreign arms sales activity by weapons suppliers.…
