Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) is joining the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), subject to ratification by the Democratic Caucus, he said Dec. 19 in a statement.
Peters’ likely return brings Michigan representation back to the committee as the committee was chaired by retired Sen. Carl Levin (D) for a handful of years. Michigan is home to a number of military installations including Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Battle Creek Air National Guard Base, Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, the Defense Logistics Agency at Hart-Doyle-Inouye Federal Center, Fort Custer Training Center and U.S. Army Garrison-Detroit Arsenal.
Peters supports using Fort Custer as the next east coast Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) site, according to spokeswoman Allison Green. Peters is the second new Democrat to be added to SASC as Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) recently announced she’s joining the panel.
