The Transportation Security Administration has ordered additional Advanced Technology (AT) X-Ray inspection systems from both OSI Systems [OSIS] and Smiths Detection to screen passenger carry-on bags at U.S. airports. Under the new orders Smiths received $8.2 million to supply 48 HI-SCAN 6040aTiX machines and OSI received $4.4 million to supply 69 of its 620DV machines. Last fall TSA ordered the first batch of X-Ray AT machines from the two companies, with Smiths receiving a $21 million order for 126 of its machines and OSI $9.3 million for 124 of its systems. TSA recently disclosed plans to acquire another 580 X-Ray AT machines this year. The new orders from Smiths and OSI will go toward the planned 580 purchases, a TSA spokeswoman tells TR2. TSA recently said it will look to add additional X-Ray AT suppliers to a Qualified Products List (TR2, April 30).
