Latvia is procuring four Improved Sentinel AN/MPQ-64 F1 air defense radars from ThalesRaytheonSystems, the company said Sept. 30.

Sentinel is a mobile three-dimensional, phased-array radar system that operates in the X-band frequency range. The system is suitable for missions including air surveillance, air defense and missile systems coordination, homeland defense, and infrastructure protection, the company said.

The system is able to detect helicopters, high-speed attack aircraft, cruise missiles, and UAVs, ThalesRaytheonSystems said on the product website. Over 200 systems have been ordered globally, with over 100 currently delivered ort in production.

ThalesRaytheonSystems highlighted the Sentinel is also the primary sensing component for alerting and cueing of targets for National Advanced Surface to Air Missile Systems (NASAMS).

“Sentinel meets the unique requirements of the Latvia Armed Forces, giving them the ability to more effectively meet today’s ever-evolving threat. The radar provides accurate, reliable situational awareness that many nations, including the United States, rely on for air defense,” Ross Niebergall, chief executive officer of US operations at ThalesRaytheonSystems.

ThalesRaytheonSystems is a joint venture with equal ownership between Raytheon [RTN] and Thales.
