Smiths Detection Notches $133M Security Contract in Qatar

Smiths Detection has won a contract worth more than $133.4 million to supply various security screening equipment at the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) in Qatar., marking the largest singe airport contract the company has ever won. Smiths will supply various HI-SCAN X-Ray inspection systems including the 10080 EDX-2is, 130100T and 7555aTiX, including iLane systems and the 500DT explosives trace detector. Shipments have already begun. “NDIA’s choice of Smiths Detection for its main security contract is a testament to qualify, reliability and cost-effectiveness of our world leading technologies,” says Mal Maginnis, president of Smiths Detection. The first expansion phase of NDIA is expected to be completed in early 2013. Smiths’ local representative on the deal was Qatar Security Systems Co.

GSA Awards Construction Firm $30M for DHS Operations Center Building

The General Services Administration (GSA) has awarded Clark Construction Group, LLC, a $29.5 million contract for the interior build out of the first half of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Operations Center (DOC) building at the department’s St. Elizabeth’s West Campus site. The scope of the contract includes the interior walls and outfitting of a new highly-secured office building next to the Coast Guard Headquarters building. The building shell of the DOC is currently under construction. DHS currently has several operations centers, which will be consolidated once the DOC is complete. In FY ’13 the Coast Guard Command Center, the Campus Security Operations Center, the Information Technology Operations Center and the Computer Support Facility will be operational within the DOC. Additional operations centers and spaces within the DOC will be brought online in the future.

Smiths Detection Nabs Awards in Brazil, India

Smiths Detection says it has won multi-million dollar contracts in Brazil and India to supply X-Ray inspection system for cargo screening. The contract with Abratec (Brazilian Association of Container Terminals for Public Use) is for 13 high-energy X-Ray cargo scanners for truck and container inspection at ports throughout Brazil. The systems are expected to be delivered this year. “We chose Smiths Detection because of its very consistent technical and price proposal,” says Sergio Martins, president of Abratec. In a separate contract worth $20 million, Smiths Detection will supply the Indian Central Board of Excise and Customs to deliver its HCVS stationary systems to the ports of Chennai, Tuticorin, Kandla and Mumbai over the next two to three years. Smiths will work in partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited, a government-owned public sector company under the Indian Ministry of Defence. “Our New Delhi facility has proved a recent investment, affirming our presence in India and allowing us to work closely with our customers,” says JK Srivastava, managing director of Smiths Detection in India.

TSA Awards Analogic Funding to Upgrade COBRA CT Scanner

Analogic [ALOG] has received $2.6 million from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to upgrade the company’s COBRA 3-D computed tomography (CT) scanning system that screens both check baggage and carry-on bags. Analogic says the COBRA DualUse system reduces costs because it has checkpoint and checked baggage screening capabilities, provides enhanced security because it brings certified checked baggage screening to the checkpoint and increases throughput by 30 percent because laptops can remain in bags.

Navy Awards Selects Northrop Grumman to Compete for $16M of Cyber Work

The Navy Supply Systems Command, Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk (Va.) has awarded eight companies, including Northrop Grumman [NOC], a potential five-year, $16.3 million indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract to support various Navy Information Operations organizations. The contract replaces a previous blanket purchase order, reducing costs and improving access to cyber security mission effectiveness. Under the contract Northrop Grumman says it will provide full scope information operations support to Fleet Cyber Command, Naval Information Operations Command Norfolk, Navy Cyber Forces, and Fleet and Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command. Northrop Grumman’s partners for the work include TeleCommunication Systems, Inc., Calhoun International, Client/Server Software Solutions, Inc., Goldbelt Hawk, JB Management, and K2 Group.

LoadStar Signs New Contracts for StellarTrak Service

LoadStar says it has signed five new customer contracts with terms up to three years for its StellarTrak GPS-based cargo security and asset monitoring service. The customers were not disclosed but LoadStar says the include a fresh produce grower, a clothing manufacturer, a multinational consumer goods company, a logistics service provider offering turnkey solutions to customers in Asia, and a manufacturer of home cooking products. LoadStar, a subsidiary of Hutchison Port Holdings, provides logistics and security services. The company says that its customers for StellarTrak share the common objective of providing physical integrity of their products while in transit as well as delivering the right product, to the right place on time.

Magal Receives Repeat Orders for Port Security

Magal Security Systems has received several contracts worth a combined $4.2 million in repeat business for seaport and airport security. The first order, valued at $2.9 million, is for expanding the scope of the Mombasa port project in Kenya to include waterways protection, license plate recognition, and an optical character reader-based tracking system for container flow management. The second contract is for $800,000 and is for expanding a perimeter intrusion detection system at a European international airport. The PIDS expansion includes the InnoFence decorative smart fence and a virtual fence based on Internet Protocol CCTV with video motion detection. Additional orders are for homeland security sites in Israel that have also ordered other solution from Magal previously.

Chemring gets $9M to Supply Japan with Bio-Detection Systems

Chemring Detection Systems, a division of Britain’s Chemring Group, says it has been awarded a $9 million contract to supply biological detection systems to the Japanese Ministry of Defense to be installed in the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force NBC Reconnaissance Vehicle. The bio-detection system is a variant of the U.S. Defense Department’s Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS) that has been approved for export by the State Department. The JBPDS has been provided to Japan for the past five years. Chemring expects to deliver between 40-60 systems over the life of the Japan NBC Reconnaissance Vehicle. Chemring Detection Systems was a former business unit of General Dynamics [GD].

Kratos gets $2M in Awards for Protecting Various Sites

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions [KTOS] has received $2.2 million in new contract awards for specialize surveillance, security and safety systems for an undisclosed federal government agency and at other customer sites. The systems will be unique, the company says.
