Catcher Holdings [CTHH] is enhancing its handheld mobile computer communications devices, the CATCHER Rhino and Grizzly, with a contact and contactless smart card reader from SMC Microsystems [SCMM] at the behest of a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agency customer. The SCM reader is being integrated directly into the backside of the CATCHER devices rather than as a plug in. The unnamed DHS agency will be using first the Rhino, and later the Grizzly, to track who is moving around their facility. The readers can read the Personal Identity Verification card mandated under HSPD-12, the Defense Department’s Common Access Card, the First Responder Authentication Credential, and Mifare-based cards. The smart card reader integration is related to Catcher’s recent sale of a small number of Rhino devices to various DHS and state agencies for evaluation purposes (TR2, March 19). “The addition of the readers…will be a major feature/function enhancement to further our market penetration efforts with these important high profile customers and other security related entities,” says Gary Haycox, Catcher’s CEO.
