Proteus Blue Technologies Corp. has introduced new technology that can house electronic equipment such as cameras and video monitoring systems at sea depths down to 5,000 feet, which the company says has implications for oceanographic and industrial research as well as security. While underwater cameras and electronics are typically housed in air-filled Plexiglas housings, those housings can be crushed at deep sea conditions. Proteus Blue fills its housing with a non-corrosive fluid that doesn’t reach with the inside of the camera, either physically or electronically. The Clearwater, Fla.-based company says that a camera mounted at the bottom of an oil rig for security purposes might also be used for environmental research.
