CHARLESTON, S.C., April 8, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. is lagging behind China and other nations in the development and marketing of 5G. Chinese companies are working to dominate 5G standards development by mandating the use of Chinese technologies in their patents, a practice that poses significant privacy and security threats to America. To address these risks, the U.S. DoD is making a substantial investment in the development of 5G technologies and is seeking assistance from industry leaders in this field.

On October 25, 2018, President Trump signed a memorandum to all federal agencies entitled, “Developing a Sustainable Spectrum Strategy for America’s Future.” In the memo, the President states that “it is imperative that America be first in fifth-generation (5G) wireless technologies—wireless technologies capable of meeting the high-capacity, low-latency, and high-speed requirements that can unleash innovation broadly across diverse sectors of the economy and the public sector.” 

Recognizing the importance of 5G, General James L. Jones (USMC Retired) recently wrote that 5G development was comparable to the Manhattan Project and 20^th century efforts to put a man on the moon. While the President’s Memo mobilizes federal agencies, a national-scale effort embracing the critical and necessary contributions of U.S. industry and academia is required to fully address this challenge. To this end, the National Spectrum Consortium (NSC) is assembling a coalition of organizations that, in conjunction with federal agencies, will establish a national effort to position the U.S. as the world leader for 5G and beyond. Through an existing Other Transaction Agreement with the DoD, NSC members are already executing R&D projects in the 5G space. As part of these efforts, the NSC is hosting a 5G Collaboration Event for government, industry, and academia on April 30-May 2 in Arlington, Virginia. The NSC invites all organizations working in the 5G space to participate in this event in support of the DoD’s 5G efforts and to help shape America’s 5G future.
