L-1 Identity Solutions [ID] and Sarnoff Corp. are pursuing an agreement that calls for the two companies to collaborate on the further development and productization of Sarnoff’s Iris on the Move (IOM) technology with L-1’s proprietary iris recognition and facial recognition algorithms. The agreement is focused on Sarnoff’s IOM portal technology, which is capable of identifying up to 30 people per minute. Once the final product is released, which is expected next year, the walk-through portal will be supplied by Sarnoff for exclusive sale to L-1. Sarnoff, a subsidiary of the independent, non-profit research and development organization SRI International, has been developing and testing its iris capture technology in the lab for the past five years and now is pursuing relationships with integrators and product developers that can bring the technology to market. L-1 says it hasn’t identified a particular customer for an IOM system but a joint press release by the two companies suggests that airports, international borders, military installations and critical infrastructure facilities are all potential markets. The companies say they eventually hope to secure government and commercial funding for further development of the technology. Separately Sarnoff has introduced an IOM Compact System for sale to integrators. The system, which is contained in a rectangular box that is 6.4 inches long by 3.1 inches high, is designed for space constrained areas as a low-cost alternative to a walk-through portal. The IOM Compact System works up to 3 feet away and can process 12 people per minute. Applications include Automated Teller Machines, secure facility access control, airport check in counters, voter registration, test taking verification, motor vehicle registration and point-of-sale customer identification, Sarnoff says.
