Australian Authority Awards Smiths Detection Contract for CT Systems
Smiths Detection has received a contract from Australia’s Northern Territory Airports to supply computed tomography (CT)-based scanners for checkpoint and checked baggage security. The value of the award wasn’t disclosed. Smiths will install seven HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX units, which will be integrated with its iLane.evo automated tray return system, for scanning carry-on
bags. The company will also install four HI-SCAN 10080 XCT units for automatic detection of explosives in checked bags. The installations at Darwin International and Alice Springs Airport will be the first in Australia for CT at the checkpoint. “The new CT screening equipment provides enhanced capabilities while maximizing passenger throughput,” says Robert Phillips, head of Security & Contingency Planning at NT Airports. “This will not only lead to fewer physical bag searches, but greater ease for passengers passing through our screening points.” The installations are expected to be complete by mid-2020. The 6040 CTiX has been certified by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration to meet Advanced Technology (AT)-2 requirements and by the European Civil Aviation Conference for EDS checked baggage C3 requirements.
