Coast Guard Medium Endurance Cutter Begins Life Extension Program

The Coast Guard last week said its 270-foot Famous-class cutter Legare began a 15-month service life extension program (SLEP), the second medium-endurance cutter that will undergo a full life extension. The SLEP will include electrical, weapons systems, new engines, and structural components. The medium-endurance cutter Spencer last July was the first Famous-class cutter to begin a SLEP with all four major work items. The Legare was commissioned in 1990.
