The State Department approved a possible $199 million Foreign Military Sale (FMS) request to Japan for 48 UGM-84L Harpoon Block II Missiles and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the potential sale on May 12.
The primary contractor would be Boeing [BA].
The requested FMS would include 48 UGM-84L Harpoon Block II Missiles, containers, spare and repair parts, support equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. government and contractor logistics and technical support services, and other related elements of logistics and program support
Japan intends to use the Block II missiles to supplement its existing Harpoon missile capability, DSCA said. “This sale will strengthen the capabilities of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and enhance its interoperability with U.S. Naval forces.”
Implementation of the FMS would not require additional U.S. government or contractor representatives in Japan, but in-country personnel would be required on a temporary basis in conjunction with program technical and management oversight and support requirements.
