Smiths Detection has introduced the B-SCAN X-Ray people screening series for checkpoint security applications at U.S. prisons and elsewhere, saying the system can help locate threats and contraband concealed on a person, in body cavities and in artificial limbs. Smiths says the B-SCAN requires just a single pass and uses a smaller dose than backscatter X-Ray systems, which are currently being deployed to some airport security checkpoints in the U.S. and internationally. The system provides a head-to-toes image of a person in less than seven seconds and includes imaging enhancement tools to allow an operator to evaluate the image. “Adding this layer of screening technology will help reduce the smuggling of narcotics, guns, knives, cell phones and other contraband into prisons,” says Jim Viscardi, vice president of Global Sales for Smiths Detection. “Our new B-SCAN series offers several configurations for both prison and general security screening to meet varying customer requirements.” He says more than 100 B-SCAN systems are installed globally in prisons, airports and customs checkpoints. They are also being used in mines and refineries to stop employee theft of diamonds, gems and precious metals.
