House, Obama Clash Over USCG Icebreaker

The House began debating a Coast Guard authorization bill last Friday that the White House has threatened to veto because it would force the service to retire an icebreaking ship. President Barack Obama’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in a Statement of Administration Policy last Thursday declared it “strongly opposes” the policy-setting bill because would require the Coast Guard to decommission the Polar Star Arctic icebreaker within three years.
