DHS S&T, Army Partner with Chemical Security Lab

The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate has opened a new Chemical Security Laboratory (CSL) with the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical Biological Center (DEVCOM CBC) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. “Having the ability to conduct our own experimental laboratory research alongside our Army partners brings a more holistic approach to our chemical security analytics and allows us to model analyses rapidly in support of DHS components and other federal, state, and local partners with greater precision,” says Acting S&T Chief Kathryn Coulter Mitchell. The lab exists within already shared space between DEVCOM CBC and S&T’s Chemical Security Analysis Center (CSAC). S&T says the new CSL partnership leverages Army expertise in chemical defense, chemical threat agents, and toxic industrial chemicals. “The CSL…will contain essential instrumentation capable of measuring physical and chemical properties for various chemical threats of interest to DHS,” says Dr. Shannon Fox, CSAC director.
