Building upon the Chemical Combat Assessment System and Biological Combat Assessment System programs, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) regarding weapons of mass destruction (WMD) aerial collection, retention, and analysis technologies capable of providing an affordable approach to successfully demonstrating WMD Aerial Collection Systems (WACS) to the warfighter community. DTRA notes that offensive operations against an adversary’s WMD research and development, production and storage facilities, and mobile WMD targets have the potential for creating collateral damage through the release of airborne WMD materials. Capabilities to assess the impact of these operations do not exist. DTRA plans an Advanced Technology Demonstration to address this shortfall. WACS hopes to leverage the BCAS and CCAS programs by integrating the ability to collect, retain and analyze radiological and nuclear material with the existing capabilities for chemical and biological detection. These capabilities will be combined in a single collection device to be integrated with an existing unmanned aerial platform. Sol. No. WACS08292008. Respond by Oct. 2.
