CBO Estimates Three Polar Security Cutters Exceed Coast Guard Projections By 60 Percent

The estimated cost to procure three new heavy polar icebreakers is $5.1 billion, 60 percent higher than the Coast Guard’s current estimate, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says. The first Polar Security Cutter (PSC) is expected to cost $1.9 billion, 37 percent more than the Coast Guard’s most recent projection, and the next two vessels about $1.6 billion on average, 75 percent more than the service estimates, CBO say in a new analysis published on Wednesday.
