Polimatrix, which last fall won a potential multi-million dollar contract to supply 20,000 pager style radiation detectors to law enforcement officers and emergency responders throughout Illinois, has signed its initial purchase order for 5,000 of the devices. Financial terms were not disclosed. The contract is with the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) and may be the largest ever in the U.S. with a state organization for the radiation detection devices. Polimatrix, a majority owned subsidiary of Homeland Security Capital Corp. [HOMS], expects to begin deliveries of its PM1703MO-1 portable radiation detectors this summer. The company also expects to execute additional purchase orders so that all 20,000 devices are under contract by 2010. ILEAS conducted a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of various competitors’ products before deciding on the Polimatrix device (TR2, Nov. 14, 2007). The company hopes that other states take advantage of ILEAS’ work as a potential “short cut” to moving forward with their own purchases, Martin Erim, CEO of Polimatrix, tells TR2. If so, the company believes it is in a good position to garner additional business from these other states, he says. Polimatrix is in discussions with nine other states an a Tier One area under the Department of Homeland Security’s Urban Area Security Initiative who have all been closely following the ILEAS evaluation and procurement, Erim says. In addition to doing radiation detection, the PM1703MO-1 also serves as a dosimeter, allowing responders to know what levels of radiation they have been exposed to.
