Marines Launch Competition For ‘Smart’ Mortar Round

The Marine Corps has launched a competition for a new 120mm “smart” mortar that can correct its trajectory mid-flight to home in on targets.A solicitation for a precision extended range munition (PERM) was released in early June, marking the end of the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase of the program. Raytheon [RTN] held the EMD contract that included delivery of 42 rounds of 120mm long-range guided mortar ammunition.Raytheon spokesman John Eagles said the company had completed the EMD work…
