Ames Research Center Devises Lightweight Heat Shield

The Ames Research Center has created a lightweight heat shield that nonetheless can stand up to temperatures of 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, NASA announced. As the weight of a spacecraft heat shield declines, the craft can carry more payload, and thus become more valuable. That Lightweight Ceramic Ablator (LCA) material won the 2007 NASA Government Invention of the Year award.
