Perspecta Announces Partnership with Abaco Systems to Bring its 1553 Bus Defender Product to Market

PR Newswire

CHANTILLY, Va., Nov. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Perspecta Inc. (NYSE: PRSP), announced today that its innovative research arm, Perspecta Labs, has entered into a partnership with Abaco Systems, Inc. (Abaco), to bring its 1553 Bus Defender™ product to market.

Warfighting systems are built for longevity and require a sophisticated means of communication, but with that comes advanced vulnerabilities. The 1553 Bus Defender solution from Perspecta Labs, developed on a Department of Defense (DoD) research program, protects weapons systems from both known and future cyberattacks.

Specifically, the MIL-STD-1553 (1553) data bus, designed long before the days of widespread computer network hacking, and the line-replaceable units (LRUs) on it are vulnerable to cyberattacks. Depending on the scope and nature of the compromise, adversaries can cause denial of service (DoS), exfiltration of critical data, neutralization or destruction of the warfighting system, loss of life, and mission failure. 1553 Bus Defender provides protection without requiring any modifications to LRUs – a key advantage over software-based approaches.

“At Perspecta Labs, we pride ourselves on our ability to invent answers to our customers’ hardest problems,” said Petros Mouchtaris, Ph.D., president of Perspecta Labs. “We have built a strong reputation of putting our proven innovations to work in the real-world, and we look forward to the opportunity to do that with a strong partner like Abaco by our side.”

“In our discussions with the DoD, the DoD has made it clear to us that it sees our primary role as being to deliver advanced technologies – especially in the area of cybersecurity – into the hands of our warfighters as quickly as possible,” said Rich Sorelle, CEO, Abaco Systems. “That’s what makes this partnership with Perspecta so exciting. 1553 Bus Defender is precisely the kind of solution our armed forces need, and it’s a privilege to be working on it.”

Prototype 1553 Bus Defender devices have been successfully tested in DoD system integration labs. Perspecta Labs and Abaco are now working together to transition the technology for widespread use. Abaco’s expertise in the design and production of rugged embedded computing hardware across a variety of form factors will ensure that the 1553 Bus Defender devices meet all critical size, weight, power, security and cost requirements.

Prototypes are currently available for demonstration and the two companies are actively reviewing and identifying opportunities for field testing of the 1553 Bus Defender capability.
