Customs and Border Protection says that through pilot programs begun in January to collect DNA samples from some non-U.S. citizens in custody it has the information needed to meet its legal requirements for a nationwide collection effort. The DNA collection pilot was initiated to discover fraudulent claims of familial relationships by aliens trying to enter the U.S. illegally, typically presenting themselves freely along the southwest border.
