The initiative aims to inspire students around the country to support our active military by sending handwritten notes of encouragement and gratitude, and learn more about geography, science and technology through the lens of the military. As part of the partnership, the organizations have adopted a ship, the USS John C. Stennis, an aircraft carrier currently deployed in the Indian Ocean.

National Handwriting Day is January 23, the birth date of John Hancock, who is well-known for his large, exhibitionistic signature on the Declaration of Independence.
