Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on Thursday nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. James Holmes and Air Force Lt. Gen. John Raymond to a pair of key service positions.

Holmes was nominated for promotion to general and for assignment as commander of Air Combat Command (ACC). Holmes currently services as Air Force deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements at the Pentagon. He would succeed Gen. Herbert Carlisle. Aerial view of the Pentagon, Arlington, VA

Raymond was also nominated for promotion to general and and for assignment as commander of Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). Raymond currently serves as deputy chief of staff for operations at the Pentagon. Gen. John Hyten is currently AFSPC chief.

Both positions are subject to Senate confirmation.
