Boomer Reprieve. A Senate panel has delayed a hearing on the thorny issue of how to proceed with plans to build a budget-busting SSBN(X) Ohio-class ballistic- missile submarine, just as lawmakers prepare to leave Washington for much of August. The SASC’s Seapower and Strategic Forces subcommittees were set to receive a closed briefing on the sub program on July 15 by Principal Under Secretary of Defense for Policy James Miller, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition Sean Stackley, and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Integration of Capabilities and Resources Vice Adm. John Blake. Lawmakers and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have sounded alarms over Navy plans to buy 12 SSBN(X)starting in from FY ’19, at a cost that could amount to half of the service’s annual shipbuilding budget.
