The Defense Department is starting up a new advanced fiber and textile technology hub in the hopes of building groundbreaking fabrics that can generate power, detect harmful chemical agents or conduct electricity.The new institute, called the Advanced Functional Fabrics of America alliance (AFFOA), will be led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said on Friday during a trip to Boston.
