The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate has issued a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) entitled Viral Genetic Stability in a Forensics Context. The BAA seeks research in the discipline of viral population genetics in the National Bioforensics Analysis Center’s (NBFAC) mission for evidentiary analysis and interpretation of results to support the FBI’s criminal investigation of terrorist acts. The NBFAC is a dedicated central microbial forensic laboratory under DHS that provides bioforensics analysis of evidence associated with an event. The goal of this research program is to determine the feasibility of inferring the statistical degree of relatedness among samples used in a bioterrorist event if the agent used is a viral agent.
