Sarnoff Corp. has received a contract from the Army Research Laboratory to develop and demonstrate a ruggedized, portable iris capture system based on the company’s Iris on the Move (IOM) technology. While the contracting agency is ARL, the award selection was made by the Pentagon’s Biometric Task Force. The maximum value for the award is $750,000. Sarnoff, a subsidiary of SRI International, says the technology will be developed for field use. Sarnoff has already developed IOM-based portal technology capable of screening up to 30 people per minute. Sarnoff says the portable portal it will develop for the Army lab will be high speed as well. “The IOM technology makes it easy to set up iris scanning checkpoints that are as reliable as other biometric-based options but quick enough to keep lines moving rapidly,” says Don Newsome, president and CEO of Sarnoff. The Army system will be able to be broken down into two man-portable duffle bags weighing between 100 and 120 pounds. It will consist of a tripod mounted camera and mirror that than tilt to capture different height subjects automatically and an illuminator.
