NATO Extends Secretary General For Another Year

The North Atlantic Council recently approved a fifth year for Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, an extension that will run through July 31, 2014.
The allies will support Rasmussen in his work to carry out NATO’s tasks, missions and objectives, based on consensual allied decisions, the council said.
Rasmussen said he was honored by the “trust and support” allied governments have shown in him. His first years saw him oversee and move forward with a new strategic concept for the alliance, an agreed missile defense plan, and successful implementation of the U.N. Security Council resolution to protect civilians in Libya.
There are more pressing tasks ahead, he said, including “completing the process of transition in Afghanistan within the timeline we have set.” Other efforts will include strengthening partners and keeping the alliance ready for the future.
“I have dedicated myself to these issues since I came into office and I am privileged to have had the chance to lead this alliance through these testing times,” he said. “This is a great responsibility and I’m determined to live up to it.”
