Smiths Detection has won over $20 million in contracts to provide automatic explosives detection equipment and checkpoint X-Ray systems at Qatar’s New Doha International Airport that is currently under construction. The security systems are slated to be integrated by late 2011. Smiths says that more than a dozen of its HI-SCAN automotive explosives detection X-Ray screening systems will be integrated in to the baggage handling system at New Doha. The systems will scan both check in and transfer baggage. The company will also supply and install over 150 X-Ray inspection systems for cabin and oversize baggage screening. “We are delighted to have been selected to protect this important new airport and anticipate that these contracts are only the start of Smiths Detection involvement as the NDIA expands in phases eventually handle around 40 million passengers a year,” says Stephen Phipson, president of Smiths Detection.
