Smiths Detection has won a $3.3 million contract to supply London’s Gatwick Airport with X-Ray screening systems to scan hold baggage in order to meet a looming deadline for more stringent security standards in Europe. Smiths is supplying is dual view HI-SCAN 10080 EDX-2is automatic explosive detection systems, which alerts an operator to a suspicious item, allowing an object to be inspected from different angles. The European Union requires all hold baggage screening systems to be Standard 2, which is a higher security level than is currently in place at most airports, by Sept. 2012. Smiths says that the 10080 EDX-2is can screen up to 1,800 items per hour in hold baggage operations.
